I will cover more about this soon. It seems to improve for all types of product reviews, single reviews, or reviews. — Danny Sullivan (@dannysullivan) April 8, 2021 Update frequency and recovery: After the announcement, Ghost Mannequin Effect I asked Danny Sullivan if the update would be rolling out as large base updates (every few months) or if sites could see improvements to as they improve their review content and the site as a whole. Danny explained that the update requires periodic refresh and we may not be notified when it happens. This is extremely important to understand.
If the update has impacted you, you should work to improve the site and content over time and wait for a refresh. You probably can't see much improvement until this refresh happens. Additionally, John Mueller explained in a Search Central hangout that he wouldn't be surprised if the algorithm made it into core web rankings at some point. Ghost Mannequin Effect This is just another reason to tackle this situation NOW and try to improve your site significantly. Here is a video of Google's John Mueller explaining this (at 29:38 in the video). Discover impact (like general core updates): Google also explained that updating product reviews can impact Discover's visibility (just like with extended core updates).
Again, this underscores the point I mentioned earlier about Google rating a site or sections more broadly. It's not uncommon for sites hit by general core updates to see a lot of volatility in Discover and now it's similar with the product reviews update. And I have an amazing example of this happening. There's a site I helped that recovered from a large kernel update last year. It's a news editor that jumped out in the December general update. Ghost Mannequin Effect It was amazing to see, but they still weren't showing up in Discover at all. The Discover report was not even appearing in GSC! Well, with the product reviews update, the site has finally started showing up in Discover. It was amazing to see.
